Walker Usage & Patient Guidance

When is a Walker Recommended?

A walker is recommended when:

    • Balance is compromised

    • Weight bearing must be reduced

    • Fall risk is high

    • Recovery requires stable support

    • Muscle strength is insufficient for a cane

Who Should Use a Walker?

  • Elderly individuals with balance issues

  • Post-surgery recovery (hip, knee, spine)

  • Patients with arthritis or muscle weakness

  • Neurological conditions affecting mobility

  • Injury rehabilitation support

How to Use a Walker Correctly

Adjust the height of the walker to be about waist-high. The height should be comfortable for the patient. It should allow for a slight bend of the elbow when you hold the handgrips of the walker – this is necessary to maintain blood circulation when using the walking frame. The ideal height (upto the handgrip) is the height of the patient upto the wrist when standing with arms on the side and elbows slightly bent.

Standard Walker:

  1. Place the walker one step ahead.

  2. Move the injured or weaker leg forward.

  3. Shift weight onto the walker.

  4. Bring the stronger leg forward.

Walker with Wheels:

  1. Push the walker forward gently.

  2. Step forward without lifting the frame.

  3. Maintain upright posture.

Reciprocating Walker:

  1. Move one side forward.

  2. Step with the opposite leg.

  3. Repeat for natural walking rhythm.

Walker Safety Tips

    • Always place all four legs firmly on the ground.

    • Avoid leaning too far forward.

    • Use rubber tips in good condition.

    • Ensure floors are dry and obstacle-free.

    • Wear supportive footwear.

Maintenance & Care Tips

  • Clean frame regularly

  • Check rubber tips for wear

  • Ensure joints remain tight

  • Store in a dry place
